AMSFAB Launches 850nm 10G VCSEL Process Platform for Extensive Datacom Applications

20242024-09-12 13:44:39

Advanced Micro Semiconductors Co., Ltd. (AMSFAB) has officially launched its 850nm 10G VCSEL process platform. Operating at the industry-standard 850nm wavelength, the platform enables high-speed data transmission at 10 Gbps. Built on an advanced oxide-confinement structure, it offers significant advantages including high reliability, low threshold current, and superior modulation bandwidth, making it ideally suited for short-reach optical interconnects. The platform is well-positioned for a broad range of applications, including optical transceivers, active optical cables (AOC), LiDAR systems, data centers and other extensive scenarios.

Fabricated using state-of-the-art epitaxial growth and wafer processing techniques, devices on this platform maintain stable operation and exceptional beam quality under elevated temperature conditions, meeting stringent performance requirements. Key performance metrics include a low drive current of just 6 mA, output power up to 2.4 mW, excellent wavelength stability, and a 3-dB modulation bandwidth exceeding 12 GHz. These characteristics make the chips highly compatible with both TO-can and non-hermetic COB packaging, providing optical module designers with maximum layout flexibility. In reliability testing, devices have successfully passed 2,000 hours of accelerated aging qualification, projecting an operational lifetime exceeding 20 years under 24/7 continuous operation—ensuring both high data throughput and long-term transmission stability.

A defining feature of the 850nm 10G VCSEL is its surface-emitting architecture, which outputs laser light perpendicular to the wafer plane. This geometry greatly simplifies the formation of 2D arrays and enables seamless optoelectronic integration, laying the groundwork for large-scale photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Additionally, the inherently circular beam profile and low divergence angle significantly enhance coupling efficiency with optical fibers, further boosting overall system performance.
